Can thermal paper be recycled? Well, you might want to think twice about recycling thermal paper if you like recycling almost everything. Thermal paper is the leading type of paper used in printing a good number of receipts. The thermal paper generally has to be coated with a chemical referred to as BPS (Bisphenol S) or BPA (Bisphenol A) for the numbers to be visible. Research has shown that BPA disrupts hormones that can pose a significant risk, especially to infants, children, and pregnant women. It has also been connected to the risk of diabetes, liver toxicity, and heart disease. Bisphenol S has also been linked with the same effects.

Thermal paper rolls have been around for over 50 years. Over that time, thermal paper has been utilized for POS receipts, labels, tickets, and even medical charts. It’s a highly-effective, very reliable, and extremely versatile paper source that grew in popularity in the 1970s.
As the world became a little more eco-conscious over the years, thermal paper started to receive some criticism. Many people started to raise the question, “Can thermal paper be recycled?” and if not, what can we do to make it a little more friendly for the environment?
It’s a question that has stuck with thermal paper for decades and something many people continue to ask to this day.
